The Phonological Awareness Test was developed specifically for diagnosing developmental dyslexia using the results of the IDS-2 Scales. It is used to assess phonological awareness, one of the functions of phonological processing. Phonological awareness is defined as the ability to consciously manipulate phonological units (syllables, sounds) mentally, including comparing, rearranging, removing, or adding them. The Phonological Awareness Test consists of two parts: 1. Sound removal and 2. Syllable removal.
Materials:
- Guide: IDS-2 in Diagnosing Dyslexia and Dyslexia Risk
- Phonological Awareness Test Sheets (10 copies)
To conduct the dyslexia diagnostic procedure described in the Guide, the following are necessary:
- Selected IDS-2 tests: Reading, Language Skills, Homogeneous Series, Mixed Series.
- Rapid Naming Test in a version for younger children (if the child is 7 years old) and/or older children (if the child is 8 years old or older) (TSN-M and/or TSN-S).
- Phonological Awareness Test. The manual for the Phonological Awareness Test is included as an annex in the Guide: IDS in Diagnosing Dyslexia and Dyslexia Risk, and the sheets can be purchased on the Phonological Awareness Test website.
- Child Information Survey Sheets.
The Phonological Awareness Test is used to assess phonological awareness, one of the functions of phonological processing. It can be applied as one of the tools used in diagnosing dyslexia and is intended for examining children and adolescents aged 11–16.
Reliability
For the Phonological Awareness Test, absolute stability was determined. The linear correlation coefficient r Pearson between measurements was .79, indicating moderate stability of the Phonological Awareness Test over time.
Validity
Children diagnosed with dyslexic disorders achieve significantly lower results in the Phonological Awareness Test than children without such disorders.
The scores in the Phonological Awareness Test weakly (though significantly) correlate with the scores of the Rapid Naming Test – higher levels of phonological awareness are associated with faster naming.
Norms
Norms for the Phonological Awareness Test were developed for annual age groups ranging from 11 to 16 years.
