Leadership Styles Inventory WERK is an adjective scale which allows to assess for a particular person the intensity of each of the four typical leadership styles – CAPTAIN, STEWARD, REVOLUTIONARY, and CHEEERLEADER – in the interpersonal relationships (i.e. related to norms), as well as to find which among the styles is dominant in that person (profile analysis). WERK consists of sixty adjectives grouped in fifteen sets. Each set includes four adjectives which the respondent has to order according to decreasing relevance: from that which describes him/her best (1) to that which describes him/her poorly or not at all (4). The necessity to confront a broad spectrum of features without a chance to avoid stimuli which threaten, or do not fit, a given person's self-image, decreases the possibility to manage that image.

Leadership Styles Inventory WERK is used primarily to identify leadership styles and defining desirable paths of competence development in managers. It is a useful tool to support recruitment, selection and development processes in organization. By assessing leadership styles profile we can find out which organization culture will be used by a person while he/she starts working at a managerial position given his/her a) personality predispositions and b) beliefs about efficient management which influence the style of communication with other people and ways of building the structure of a managed organization. Please note, however, that WERK cannot prejudge whether a person will be a good or bad manager.
Reliability
Reliability of measurement of leadership styles by the WERK inventory was estimated using the internal consistency method and taking Cronbach's alpha coefficient as a reliability index. Since the measurement scale is a rank-scale the reliability coefficient was calculated with the use of polychoric correlations matrix. The values of Cronbach's alpha coefficients varied between 0,70 and 0,84.
Validity
The content, theoretical and criterial validity of the tool was examined (the compliance of the assessments of judges competent for the consistency of positions included in individual scales and the relationship of management styles with personality dimensions measured by the ACL Scale and the NEO-FFI questionnaire were assessed, and the consistency of self-diagnoses of managers with assessments of their managerial styles made by subordinates was checked). Most of the assumptions were confirmed.
Norms
Norms were presented on a standard scale of 19 grades (1–19) with a mean of 10 and a standard deviation of 3. General norms for the whole population were developped. The normalization sample included 204 persons representing the population of working adults. There were 101 men and 103 women of ages between 21 and 60 years (M = 35,02; SD = 8,12). Their professional experience varied between 1 and 40 years (M = 11,76); the majority of respondents worked in big and small cities and had at least a high school education.
The test is also available as an online examination on the Epsilon Platform and as an option for entering and calculating scores from the paper-and-pencil version on the Epsilon Platform.
