Fourth (extended) edition of the manual (2011).
The STAI measures anxiety understood as a transient and situationally determined state of the individual and anxiety understood as a relatively stable personality trait.
The STAI consists of two sub-scales, one (X-1) measuring state anxiety and the other (X-2) measuring trait anxiety. The items of the sub-scales are printed on the reverse sides of the same test sheet. Each sub-scale consists of 20 items which the subject answers by selecting one of four pre-categorised answers.
Materials:
- Kit (manual, scoring key, 25 test sheets)
- Manual
- Test sheets (25 copies)
- Scoring key
Primarily for research purposes and screening; X-1 scale additionally useful in experimental studies requiring recording changes in the level of anxiety.
Reliability
Both sub-scales have high internal consistency; their stability, especially that of scale X-1, is lower.
Validity
Theoretical validity of both scales was confirmed by many studies: scores in STAI correlate significantly with the scores gathered by tools measuring anxiety-like theoretical constructs; the validity of the X-1 scale has been additionally verified and confirmed in numerous experimental studies. Diagnostic and prognostic validity tested on a sample of soldiers: results on both STAI scales allow to diagnose soldiers poorly adapted to duty as well as to predict the occurrence of such behavior in the future. Correlations with ACL, EPQ-R and IVE.
Norms
For adolescents at the age of 15–16, adults (21–79 years), soldiers in basic military service.
The test is also available as an online examination on the Epsilon Platform and as an option for entering and calculating scores from the paper-and-pencil version on the Epsilon Platform.
