Raven 2 is a new version of the well-known Raven’s Progressive Matrices Test, combining its three earlier versions:
- Standard (SPM) – Forms: Classic, Parallel, and Plus,
- Colored (CPM),
- Advanced (APM).
The Raven 2 Progressive Matrices Test is a non-verbal tool designed to assess general cognitive abilities. It evaluates intellectual efficiency, which reflects the speed of effective intellectual work. However, it only measures the educative aspect of this ability. A full evaluation requires also measuring the reproductive aspect.
The test consists of 60 tasks grouped into five series (A–E), with 12 tasks in each. The figures in the tasks are colorful and include: 2x2 matrices, 3x3 matrices, 6-element series. Patterns with missing pieces to be completed. The test-taker’s task is to select one of five options that completes the matrix, series, or pattern. Depending on age, the test-taker completes either three or four series.
All tasks are entirely new.
The raw score is converted into an Ability Index, which serves as the basis for standardized scoring. Standardized results have been developed for 32 age groups ranging from 6;0 to 79;11 years.

Raven 2 allows for the assessment of individuals with varying levels of ability. It is suitable for individuals aged 6 to over 79 years. The test is widely applicable where the evaluation of intellectual potential is important for forecasting future achievements. Its broad age range makes it suitable for:
- Educational guidance (e.g., as a supplementary tool for determining the next stages of education or identifying students needing remedial programs).
- Career counseling (e.g., selection or advice).
- Research on the nature and development of intelligence.
- Polish studies have shown that the test effectively differentiates results of individuals with mild intellectual disabilities but is too difficult for those with moderate intellectual disabilities. Therefore, it should not be used for testing individuals with moderate intellectual disabilities.
Reliability
The measurement accuracy of Raven 2 is satisfactory for most age groups, with slightly lower reliability for the youngest and oldest test-takers. Internal consistency coefficients of .80 or higher support its use in individual diagnoses.
The results show satisfactory stability, with minimal improvement when the test is repeated after a short interval.
Validity
Results from Raven 2 strongly correlate with non-verbal IQ scores from the Leiter-3 scale. Moderate correlations were found with individual intelligence tests within the Leiter-3 Cognitive Battery, supporting Raven 2’s diagnostic validity.
Raven 2 results significantly correlate with school grades for students in grades IV–VIII of primary school and general secondary school students. The correlations for average grades are moderately strong, suggesting good predictive validity. However, for technical school students, the correlations are weak, and for vocational school students, no significant correlations were found.
Individuals with intellectual disabilities tend to score within ranges consistent with their condition. For those with moderate intellectual disabilities, the test may be too challenging, yielding the lowest possible score, which is difficult to interpret. For children with moderate intellectual disabilities, the test has low reliability. However, for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities, the test is sufficiently reliable, producing varied results.
Norms
Norms were developed for both genders combined, as no gender differences were found among children or adolescents, and only one age group showed differences among adults.
Norms were created for 32 age groups, using intervals consistent with the original test version:
- 6;0–8;11: norms every 4 months (e.g., 6;0–6;3, 6;4–6;7, etc.),
- 9;0–13;11: norms every 6 months,
- 14;0–16;11: yearly norms,
- 17;0–19;11: norms for a 3-year interval,
- 20;0–34;11: norms for 5-year intervals,
- 35;0–64;11: norms for 10-year intervals,
- 65;0–79;11: norms for 5-year intervals.
The test is also available as an online examination on the Epsilon Platform and as an option for entering and calculating scores from the paper-and-pencil version on the Epsilon Platform.
