Description: TSD measures verbal skills in both understanding and producing language. Apart from the general result, one also obtains two specific indices -– of passive and active speech. The test consists of 90 tasks, constituting four subtests. Two of them measure passive speech and require the examinee to determine whether the heard words belong to given categories (determined with the words constituting the superordinate terms), and to recognize synonyms. The last two measure active speech and require to name the depicted objects as well as to fill in the gaps in the sentences read aloud by the examiner.

Reliability: Satisfactory or high indices of the internal consistency (assessed with the split-half method), and absolute stability for speech indices, active and passive, and (mainly) for the general score.

Validity: The validity of the test is proved by correlations with the tests measuring fluid and crystallized intelligence (CFT1-R, TMK, IDS), and by the relation of the score with teachers’ grades in respect to skills in Polish, mathematics, and science. As expected, relations were found between TSD scores and the age of children, their place of residence, and their parents’ educational level.

Norms: Standard ten, developed for children aged 4;0-7;11, based on a 750-strong sample.

Application: TSD can be used as a basic tool in diagnostic settings where an assessment of current language skills is needed (e. g. with regard to school problems or school readiness assessment). It will be useful in screening, enabling to find children with retarded language development, and those highly skilled. Since verbal skills are an especially important component of the crystallized intelligence, the TSD scores can be treated as its approximate measure and a valuable addition to the intelligence diagnosis using fluid intelligence tests like Cattell Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFT1-R) or Raven’s Matrices (RPM).
