Intelligence and Development Scales for Pre-School Children IDS-P

2015-02-10

Intelligence and Development Scales for Pre-School Children IDS-P is a new version of the well-known IDS test, designed to assess younger children, aged 3-5 (norms 3;0 – 5;11). Diagnosis with IDS-P develops a profile and can assess test-taker's strong and weak points.

The tasks resemble a child's play, they measure abilities which determine intelligence level and competences which are important from the point of view of a child's behavior in pre-school and are rehearsable (culture-determined).

The Scales consist of the part where cognitive skills are measured (which includes the following sub-tests: Visual perception, Selective attention, Phonological memory, Visual-spatial memory, Spatial reasoning, Conceptual reasoning, and Auditory memory), the part which measures competence (including the following sub-tests: Motorics, Manipulation, Visual and auditory co-ordination, Social and emotional competence, Logical and mathematical reasoning, Active speech, Vocabulary, and Passive speech), and the tools which allow to measure coping in stressful and difficult situation (the sub-test Gratification delay and the scales Persistence and Achievement satisfaction) .

Opportunities of analysis and interpretation given by IDS-P make it a pefect tool to be used for:

  • assesssing intelligence level
  • defining a given child's strong and weak points (e.g. for the purpose of education and re-education planning)
  • pointing out children who are most gifted or have a high intellectual capability
  • assessing whether a child is ready to begin school education

IDS-P results

Raw results in each test were normalized which allows for profile development and comparisons between individuals.

Joint results of cognitive skills assessments are conceived  in the form of IQ and interpreted as fluid intelligence. Results of some of the competence assessment tests (dealing with mathematics and language), are conceived in the form of IQ and interpreted as crystallized intelligence. The sum of all those joint results is conceived in the form of IQ and interpreted as an index of general intelligence.

Advantages of Intelligence and Development Scales for Pre-School Children IDS-P:

  • results of all three intelligence scales can be conceived in the form of Wechslerian IQ
  • possibility to assess selected areas of behaviour (modular assessment)
  • training in application and interpretation offered by the PTL
  • Polish norms for general population (of almost 900 assessed children)
  • wide range of possible applications
