IDS Intelligence and Development Scales promotion meeting

2013-05-06

This spring, we presented a novel, versatile product for Polish psychologists to examine skills and competencies which hopefully will join the canon of psychological tools measuring intelligence and development in younger children. In April, we released the long-awaited IDS Intelligence and Development Scales in Children aged 5-10 a Polish adaptation of the German-language version. The Polish adaptation and normalization lasted for three years during which over 700 children were examined. There was almost the whole team of the Laboratory involved as well as numerous co-workers and normalizers.

We decided to honor this event, so important to us, by organizing a meeting in the circle of friends and co-workers of the Laboratory as well as practitioners and theoreticians of the intelligence  development in children. The meeting took place on April 24th, 2013 at the seat of the Laboratory, in Warsaw.

The invited guests responded numerously and enthusiastically to our invitations – it’s time to express our thanks for it. We had thereby the pleasure to host the best specialists in Poland, practitioners and theoreticians, excelling in diagnosing children. We were also delighted to welcome the authors of the original version of the IDS, Prof. Alexander Grob, PhD, Priska Hagmann-von Arx, PhD  from the University of Basel along with the representative of the editor of the original Scales, Hogrefe Verlag GmbH, Nadine Schuchart.

The meeting started with the presentation of the most important distinctive features of the IDS Intelligence and Development Scales by the co-author of the Polish adaptation, Diana Fecenec.

Prof. Barbara Szmigielska-Siuta from the Jagiellonian University conveyed her opinion on the usability of the IDS in research and in teaching students. Regrettably, her professional duties prevented her from the participation in the meeting, but the sent opinion was presented by Teresa Szustrowa, PhD. Then, Elżbieta Tomczak, director of the Psychological/Pedagogical Counseling Center in Września, broadly experienced in using the IDS, told us about her learning of the testing procedure, and the broad application spectrum in the psychological practice.

The authors of the original version, Prof. Alexander Grob and Priska Hagmann-von Arx, PhD, showed a presentation about the history of the origins of the IDS and gave an account of the IDS version for preschoolers (IDS-P), recently issued in the German-speaking countries.

Before ending the official part, the guests were being offered the opportunity to be the first to learn about a competition for psychologists diagnosing children aged 5-10 ‘IDS Intelligence and Development Scales – Case Study’, details of which are already available on our site. Aleksandra Jaworowska also gave information about the beginning of the normalization within the Polish adaptation framework of the IDS-P, and encouraged the psychologists to participate in these studies.

The meeting was followed by a modest banquet, which provided an additional occasion to share the observations on the presented tool.

We hope the participation in the meeting will be considered valuable and useful by all persons present, and will foster cooperation between diagnosticians-theoreticians, authors of diagnostic tools, and psychologists-practitioners.
