Adaptive Behavior Assessment System is a tool which allows to assess adaptive behaviors necessary for effective and independent functioning within a society. The questionnaire includes 5 versions: two for parents and two for teachers (ages 0-5 and 5-20) as well as the self-rating version for persons aged 16-20.

Each version consists of 10 scales measuring various aspects of adaprive behavior: Communication, Social life, Functional skills, Home life, School life, Health and security, Leisure, Self-service, Self-direction, Socialization, Motorics (up to the age of 5) and Work (from the age of 16).

Scores in the three spheres of adaptive founctioning:

  • cognitive sphere
  • social sphere
  • practical sphere

are calculated, as well as the General Adaptation Index.

The ABAS-3 also includes the Intervention Plan consisting of the recommended rehabilitation and training activities fitting all the items included in the assessment sheets. The Plan is of much help  when working with persons having adaptive disorders.

Reliability: Very high internal consistencies of the General Adptation Index, of the scores on scales and in spheres. Confirmed high internal stability of the tool as well as high inter-rater agreement.

Validity: In the Polish standardization study children from the general sample were compared to children from various clinical groups, including those with minor and moderate intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders and hearing loss. Discriminatory validity of the tool was confirmed – scores of clinically diagnosed children differed significantly from those in the general sample group.

Norms: Separate norms for several age groups for each version based on approx. 1672 administered questionnaires.

Applicability: The ABAS-3 is a first tool available on the Polish market designed specifically to assess adaptive behaviors in children and adolescents. It is, above all, an excellent tool to measure the level of social adptation which is the second criterion – besides the level of intellectual functioning – used in the intellectual disability diagnosis. Moreover, the ABAS-3 can be appllied to:

  • help diagnose and specify development and behavior disorders
  • diagnose functional limitations in children and adolescents with disorders and disabilities
  • certify the necessity on the part of examinee to receive additional forms of asssistance
  • plan and monitor therapies or trainings
  • evaluate therapeutic programs or therapeutic effectiveness studies.
