General assembly of the Warsaw Branch and the National Assessment Section of the Polish Psychological Association

2018-02-20

There were many interesting events last weekend. On Friday, February 16 a training conference of the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Psychological Association (PTP) was held together with the Ordinary General Assembly of the Branch. The Laboratory was represented at both events by Urszula Brzezińska and Dr. Emilia Wrocławska-Warchala.

The conference began with a lecture by Maria Król-Fijewska and Piotr Fijewski followed by a discussion. The speakers, both certified therapy supervisors, talked about how modern knowledge of experiencing processes can be used in everyday life and in therapy.

The second part of the conference was devoted to the general assembly of the PTP Warsaw Branch. Annual reports of the Board and of the Auditing Committee for the year 2017 were accepted. All members of the leaving Board were accepted for another term, the only changes having been made in the Auditing Committee. Due to formal reasons Warsaw delegates for November 2018 General Meeting of PTP could not be elected. However, written declarations by persons who would have liked to represent the Warsaw Branch at the Meeting were gathered.

The Conference closed with a lecture by Prof. Adam Tarnowski on the EuroPsy certificate. EuroPsy is a standard introduced in 22 European countries. The certificate confirms professional qualifications of psychologists however different were paths of obtaining them. Introduction of the certificate in Poland will allow for a wider recognition of Polish psychologists' competences throughout Europe. Prof. Tarnowski also mentioned the EPPA EuroTest-WO certificate designed for test-users in business which is being prepared now by the Polish Certificate Commission NAC_PL established by PTP. Psychology of work and organization is the only branch of Polish psychology now which opens a path of professional development for diagnosticians and consultants and propagates European standards for test-users.

On the next day, Saturday, February 17 the Second Conference of the National Assessement Section of PTP was held together with a general assembly of the Section. The Laboratory's representative this time was Joanna Stańczak.

The main part of the Conference began with a speech by Dr. Piotr Zielinski who presented a new method for developing better norms by means of a limited normalization sample, the so-called continuous norming. It is worth mentioning that the Laboratory has already used this innovative method when constructing new tools. Next speaker was Prof. Jerzy Brzezinski who talked about ethical standards in psychological assessment. During a discussion which followed the topic of the Psychologist Ethical and Professional Code was taken up. The Code is now being revised by PTP. For the year 2018 a nationwide discussion of the revised Code is planned together with a survey on the most controversial issues. Participants of the survey are going to be not only psychologists but also a sample of potential recipients and orderers of psychological interventions. The complete revised version of the Code is going to be presented, discussed and voted at the PTP General Assembly of Delegates planned for the fall of 2018.

The second part of the Conference was devoted to the general assembly of the Section. Reports  of the Board and Auditing Committee for the year 2017 were accepted.

During the third part of the conference results obtained by special teams dealing with the various issues connected to psychological assessement were presented. The presentation began with a lecture by Prof. Władysław Jacek Paluchowski who made his audience familiar with the work of the team dealing with the assessement of persons with disabilities. The team prepared guidelines for using “Standards of Psychological Assessment” in cases when those assessed have disabilities but when the disability itself is not the subject of assessement. Some of the more general comments were included in the standards. Other comments were discussed and accepted with minor changes. The guidelines will be available for all interested at the Section's website. Next speaker, Prof. Grażyna Krasowicz-Kupis talked about the team preparing standards of psychological assessement in education – the standards to be used by psychologists working in consultancies. Elaborated by the team under the auspices of the Ombudsman for Children they are soon to be published and distrubuted for free in psychological and educational consultancies. The publication of a similar document addressed for school psychologists is also planned – this initiative is going to be supported by the Ministry of Education.

It was indeed a stimulating weekend for all those interested in the activities and development of the milieu of psychologists associated with PTP. We congratulate all delegates elected to perform important functions within the PTP structures and we count on further fruitful work of both  the Warsaw Branch and the Assessement Section of PTP.
